British Podcast Awards 2023 - Best Fiction Podcast Gold WINNER
In 2016, me and a small group of friends started wooden overcoats over a cup of tea in a flat in brixton.
we made the first series on borrowed money that we’d pay back using money in a hat from live shows. The next three series we crowd funded from its devoted fanbase. You can read more about the show and listen to it here.
over the next few years it would give us our closest friendships, trips around the world, a couple of awards and we’d owe it our careers.
i co-produced and directed it with my long time partner in crime john wakefield. It’s where i cut my teeth as a radio maker, learning sound design, directing, recording, spreadsheets, live sound, everything basically.
people liked it. here are some quotes:
"Move over, Radio 4. This ensemble scripted comedy about a pair of doomed undertakers is funnier than anything broadcast on the BBC. Siblings Rudyard and Antigone Funn battle to keep their undertaking business on the small island of Piffling going after a new competitor arrives in town." - Caroline Crampton, The New Statesman - The Best Podcasts of 2016
“Over the four available seasons of “Wooden Overcoats,” it becomes impossible not to adore everyone in the village.” - Phoebe Letts, The New York Times
“This podcast is hilarious, charming, there’s three seasons of it to fill your longest driving day and there’s also a mouse called Madeleine. Download immediately.” - Chloë Nannestad, Reader’s Digest
"I. Am. In - oh boy this is great - I am in love." - Glen Weldon, Pop Culture Happy Hour
“A good sitcom is one that reliably comforts while also deepening over time.” - Nick Quah, Vulture - The 10 Best Podcasts of 2018
"This daffy British podcast sitcom has been around since 2015, and it’s only gotten better over time...Wooden Overcoats has never been more addictive, and its world has never been more interesting." - Nick Quah, Vulture - The Best Podcasts of 2018 (So Far)
“For every friend who asks why I like audio-based material, I recommend Wooden Overcoats, a podcast for people who think podcasts are for other people.” - Rachel Lopez, The Hindustan Times
“A shining example of the power of the form [of audio drama].” - Joshua Dudley, Forbes
"The Archers meets Six Feet Under." - Front Row, BBC Radio 4
"Inspired comedy." - John Bungey, The Times
"A refreshing, bright and oddly absorbing experience." - Sarah Griffin, The Irish Times
"As good, if not better, than any Radio 4 comedy offering. It’s about rival funeral directors and it’s fab." - Miranda Sawyer, The Guardian (print edition in The Observer)
