This idea began as a full cast drama, before i was brought on to help convert it into a true crime documentary. covering the first murder trial under the new US constitution, the show documents the history shaping trial. The lawyers for the defence: Hamilton and burr.
It’s not the first time I’ve been brought on a show to completely rework something that wasn’t quite coming together but it was by far the most rewarding. It took the number 1 spot in the US for several weeks and picking up a signal award for the issues it highlighted.
true crime with contemporary cases benefits from an immediacy of subject matter. You care because these people are 5 minutes from you. With this story, we are dealing with dusty old manuscripts and biased court reportage.
The story though is just as important. By using the narration to accentuate and enhance the levity of the original drama we could keep it fun and so, keep people interested in an old story.
Alison had a clear and brilliant vision for how to tell the story. For three months we collaborated closely over zoom to realise that vision. google docs, endless cups of coffee, award winning results.
